It comes from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom where people who 'shiped Buffy with Angel (together forever) were called Ducks. People like myself, a Spike fan, weren't very fond of the Ducks, nor were they fond of us. Calling us Masterbators (after the actor who played Spike, James Marsters) and the like.
Fandom can be a wonderful place to meet people and exchange ideas, but it can also be a very petty place populated by people with way too much time on their hands.
