Meanwhile, outside the polling place, GOP operatives were catcalling to Hispanic voters (“Go back where you came from”) and inside, elections officials were telling Hispanics, in violation of the First Amendment and the U.S. Voting Rights Act, that they couldn’t speak Spanish to each other in the polling place.

I left NH exhausted and was dismayed by the Ohio results. But I took home the passion of Ward 5 – overrun by voters of all stripes, nearly 800 new ones, many waiting on line for hours to cast a ballot. They wouldn’t be deterred by discrimination, by deliberately bad elections officials, by chaos. Democracy was alive for them, and therefore very much alive for me.
