Helping Out & Sharing
Dec. 5th, 2004 09:25 pmYet another Holiday of Giving suggestion:
Telling Tales edited by Nadine Gordimer
This very special book is a collection of short stories written by the likes of Arthur Miller, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Woody Allen and John Updike by request of the Nobel Laureate in Literature Nadine Gordimer. The reason that motivated her to write to these talented people asking for a story? Raising funds for AIDS sufferers in Africa. The contributions are quite amazing and you get to do a double good - you buy quite an unique collection of short stories and, at the same time, you are doing something to help make this world a bit better.

I should be doing other things.
Things like going over a friend's story and things like working on my own tale of the adventures of a little girl in a pantry.
Instead, I went to the construction sort of place (Home Depot, Brazilian version) and got materials to build a closet. I usually do that when I'm feeling not so happy. I am one of those people who has a problem with the whole Christmas/Chanukah season, but that's not why I'm in overalls. I'm not building closets to get over the horrible who buys more and gets into greater credit card debt competition. At least not yet. I'm building closets to get away from myself for a while. When I'm with my level, my drill and the like I'm no longer me, me. I'm... I don't know. Somebody who doesn't question so much and who doesn't think and obsesses about the state of things. All the overalls person cares about is whether the shelves are levelled or if that wall needs another coat of paint. You got it... Simple, uncomplicated stuff.
My great grandfather was part of the first generation in my family to take the whole pen mightier than sword seriously and became a journalist. This man, who dressed for dinner every freaking evening and waxed his perfect moustache, used to say that simple people led happy lives.
So, I guess that's what I'm trying to be for a while - simple, uncomplicated and a bit more on the happy of the spectrum.
