The Ladies of Llangollen
Jan. 6th, 2005 10:36 amI stumbled across the incredible story of the two Ladies of Llagollen quite by accident and thought I'd share. I don't want to bore you with my dull RL (other than to say that the slowness of my replies will have more to do with my back than with anti-social behaviour) and will readily go on to these two fascinating ladies who led quiet, and yet extraordinary, lives.
Once upon a time, in Miss Parker's boarding school in Kilkenny, Ireland, there lived a pretty young orphan by the name of Sarah Ponsonby. Having lost both parents and a stepmother to boost, young Sarah had been handed at the tender age of thirteen to the care of a cousin, Lady Betty Fownes. Unfortunately, Sir William Fownes (AKA guardian's lecherous husband) decided it would be within his rights to force himself upon the young, orphaned Sarah. Those advances weren't welcome. At all. Yes, it does sound like the plot for one of those melodramatic silent movies, but it so isn't.
In 1768, the Honourable Sarah met Lady Eleanor Butler, of the Butlers of Kilkenny Castle, and the sixteen years age gap was no impediment to the close friendship that flourished. In the midst of all their letter writing, the two women concocted a brilliant plan to escape their families so they could live together in Gothic pastoral bliss.
