When George Bailey (James Stewart) is all packed to go to school, having already sacrificed his dream of visiting Europe so he could help straighten out business after his father passed on, and he challenges the board when they are ready to close his dad's loan business? He's then told the business can go on, if he, George, stays on. He emphatically refuses; all he ever wanted was to get out of Bedford Falls.
"But George, they will vote for Potter [the town's evil money loving man - how times have changed...] otherwise."
There's a tight close up on dear George and you can see what it's doing to him - the loss, his goodness telling him he has to do what's right, the need to be free... It's painful because you already know what he'll do: George will sacrifice once again. You see the final surrender on his face later that evening when he hears the whistle of the train.
George gives up his own dreams so he can do what's right.
It's a wonderful life and you can't take it with you [cookies for you who got it]. So, live a little - do a little dance, share a little love. Have a nice life - just don't forget to do what's right.
