Sunshine and Good Bye

Paraty is undoubtedly a beautiful city. The solid colonial houses with high windows and frames painted in bright colours line cobblestone streets that have remained unchanged for the past 200 years. (Trust me, for Brazil 200 years is a very long time.) It’s a specially unique place full of peculiarities – about once a month, when the moon is full and the tide is high, the ocean floods the streets of the centre and for a short while the city becomes a tropical Venice, with makeshift bridges here and there for pedestrians. The locals like it that way.
Yes, I’m still here. Unfortunately, it won’t be for much longer. It’s time to go back home. I'll soon be off to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Next comes a business trip. Then I’ll take a deep breath (ie doctors) and prepare for the UK & Ireland trip. I was going to get a Britrail pass, but friends advised me to fly when necessary (Dublin - Edinburgh - London) and to rent a car when the need arises - promising it will be cheaper that way. I was sorely disappointed since I do enjoy trains and the rail system in the UK seems to pretty much go everywhere. I’m still planning on going to York by rail. So there.
They are now getting ready for the religious Festa do Divino celebration that is going on here this week. There are white doves (The Holy Spirit) everywhere and, as they pass by my open windows on their way to the town square, I can see the locals all dressed in white carrying their blood red banners and hear the drums, horns and pandeiros warming up for the big parade.
I have to try and remember how to post photographs on my LJ so you can see it.
Just like I have and try to remember how to do LJ cut so I don’t end up with a way too long post.

I don’t know whether anybody other than
hesadevil listens to BBC Radio. If the little grey cells are working, I first found Radio 4 by way of Mr. Gaiman and the Punch radio play and it became an integral part of my life after the trouble with my eyes began. Now that the eyes are doing as well as they ever will, I still listen to the radio daily and can’t imagine doing without. One of my favourite shows is, easily, I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. The show’s host, Humphrey Lyttelton, a gentleman so naughty he sometimes made me giggle like a schoolgirl, passed away on the 25th leaving my world a little bit sadder. ISIHAC, the antidote to panel games, made me realize that even though Stephen Fry is as close to perfection as they come in my book, he really, really can’t sing - unlike Rob Brydon who can and will do a mean Tom Jones. Some of you have that show or even that artist who manage to lift your spirits even when you are feeling bluer than blue and those of you will understand the gratitude I feel and how the passing of somebody I really didn’t know, has made me more than a bit sad.

Date: 2008-05-04 01:31 pm (UTC)Do you have an itinerary? I'm on the rail route from London to York and if I'm in the UK when you're on that leg of your trip, it would be the ideal time for us to meet.
They're repeating ISIHAC on BBC and it still makes me smile.
They're also doing a mini-Discworld series to mark Terry's 60th birthday. Small Gods ep 2 yesterday.

Date: 2008-06-11 03:43 am (UTC)One of the things I want to do when in London is try to buy the 50th series CD. One of my favourite moments was when Rob Brydon sang Who Do You Think You're Kidding Mr. Hitler... One of many times ISIHAC made my day a bit better.
Did you hear the interview? There are times I don't understand the Plan.

Date: 2008-05-04 07:01 pm (UTC)One of the great things about Paraty is that it never changes. The years pass by and the only thing you'll notice is a sign that says Internet Cafe on one of the restaurants off the main square...
I'm trying to figure out how to post the pictures and will let you know :)

Date: 2008-05-04 08:47 pm (UTC)uploading pics:
You have a paid account, so you could upload them to LJ's scrapbook hosting, but that can be a pain in the rear when it comes to posting them IN your LJ.
If you want to do it a little bit lazily, you can just make a sub-gallery on your LJ scrapbook (at http://pics.livejournal.com/chenanceou/) and then just post a link to the sub-gallery
Create a new gallery: http://pics.livejournal.com/manage/gals
Once you create it, it will take you to a page for that gallery. On the left hand side, there will be a link to Upload Pictures. choose that, upload them, then you can go back to your main gallery (http://pics.livejournal.com/chenanceou/) and link to your new gallery.
I like LJ scrapbook because it doesn't resize pics, it makes auto-thumbnails in a gallery, and there's no bandwidth fee. And, hey, if you have a paid account, it's already paid for!
