Do not smooch in the company of others.
It is an oddity of human nature that while pornography is much sought after, we do not generally delight in seeing others slurpily manifest their love in public. Maybe it is just envy: the single are harshly reminded of the lack of affection in their lives, the long-attached of the lack of raw passion in theirs. Whatever the explanation, public smooching is exceedingly irritating to others, which means we shouldn't do it. As that great philosopher Everyone's Ex once said, "Try thinking of other people for a change."
Reading >The Guardian< this morning I found an article about manners. I happily clicked since it's been a peeve of mine how people these days seem to regard these little niceties as superfluous. I was brought up differently, where manners were a sign of consideration for others and nothing else. Anyway... I came across the little tidbit above and was sort of taken aback. I do understand not wanting to see the spit going from one mouth to the next, while flashes of tongue make me think of fresh water eels in a feeding frenzy, I do. What I don't get is - no smooching at all?!
Question: Is it really offensive to see public displays of affection - in the specific form of mouth kissage? Or is it only when it reaches the deep throat, er, depths?
Kisses are a better fate than wisdom.
- E. E. Cummings
ETA: I didn't rig this.

Date: 2004-11-25 10:29 am (UTC)Kissing, hugging, hand-holding - all aawww moments. Especially among the not-so-young-anymore couples of which I am one half.
